Buensalido Architects is an architectural, interior, and urban design laboratory solely committed to creating original, avant-garde, innovative, and progressive solutions.

We started in 2006, with the commitment to introduce fresh, bold, and innovative concepts to Philippine design setting.

Our philosophy is inspired by the “random responses” of life. Life is filled with an endless array of disparate events and elements, and we perpetually try to make sense of it by piecing everything together.

How we are able to combine these elements determines the significance and fulfillment of one’s life. Only then will we perceive and appreciate the juxtaposition of different elements.

The same theory is applied to our designs, through unique and unusual design compositions; “random responses” to specific contexts become a design strategy.

Balance between the different components is achieved to form a coherent whole, one that marries intelligence and imagination.

This design nature creates an exciting, vibrant, and forward-looking aesthetic. With our distinct creativity and vigor in all of its endeavors, we hope to uplift the current state of design in the country.

MMDA COMPLEX COMPETITION

LOCATION: ORTIGAS CBD, PASIG CITY, METRO MANILA
SIZE: 40,000 SQ.M.

A Weaving of Ideals towards a Sustainable Urban Future.

To say that MMDA’s mission is not easy is an understatement. To be in charge of conceiving, regulating, supervising, implementing and enforcing policies, programs and projects for Metro Manila is not only difficult and challenging, but infinitely complex.

For this daunting mission to be achieved a long process of planning, communication, collaboration, and cooperation between countless municipalities and agencies (both public and private) has to be done; and the process of weaving comes to mind.

It’s prevalence in our culture ensures a clarity of origin, universal appeal, and legibility of a narrative and intent. But more importantly, the act of getting formerly disconnected elements to form a culturally expressive, efficient, structurally strong, resilient, and wholistically coherent fabric suggests how the agency can attain an organized and humane metropolis.

This idea of weaving – of coming together, of binding, intertwining, of working together – becomes the main strategy in all components of the building design; from spatial organization, zoning, massing, until its visual manifestation.

Project Team:

Principal Architect – Jason Buensalido; Lead Project Architect – Jerome Bautista; Project Architects – Camille Boncan, Nikko Bumanglag, Gerome Pacete, Deeno Singson, Kazia Pacia, Christian Perez

PORT[R]AL HOUSE

LOCATION: MCKINLEY WEST, TAGUIG CITY, METRO MANILA
SIZE: 750 SQ.M.

The idea takes off from the owners’ extensive art collection. In the same way that art can sometimes temporarily transport one to another realm, the house is envisioned to be a portal to a safe oasis – a haven from the outside world and all else that come with it (stress, pressure, judgement, danger, constraint). A private space where moments and memories can be ‘framed’ and be remembered.

It is designed without the external pressures of style nor trend, but is a portrait of the collective personality of the family within.

The architecture simply aims to be a backdrop for their art collection and its multitude of meanings – a home that encourages creativity, imagination, intelligence, and purpose.

Project Team:

Principal Architect – Jason Buensalido; Lead Project Architect – Yani Dela Pasion; Project Architects – MJ Arocena, Mike Germino; Technical Innovations Architects – Larry Espino, Jaydee Masajo

CNT HEADQUARTERS

LOCATION: MANDALUYONG, METRO MANILA

The future headquarters of CNT, a manpower agency, is a herald of multiple promises. To the company’s stakeholders and employees, it is a testimony and a constant reminder to their commitment to the mission and purpose of the company to uplift as many people as possible. To their clients, the building is also a projection of commitment to continuously evolve towards excellence. Most importantly, the headquarters is a promise to the people they help – that in time, they too, will flourish and attain a prosperous life.

AMOA

LOCATION: COMPOSTELA, CEBU
SIZE: 60 HECTARES

Amoa, which means “our own” in the local dialect and sprawled across 60 hectares of rolling terrain and spectacular views, aims to give a feeling of daily aspiration and real sense of ownership within each homeowner by including them in design process of their homes and ensuring that they feel a strong sense of community in every opportunity.

The architecture is inspired by traditional Filipino homes fused with principles modernism. Ventanillas (ventilation slats seen in traditional homes) that are interpreted as brise-soliels (sun screens) not only serve to protect the interiors from the heat and give a feeling of physical and visual security, but also become the source of customization which leads to a high sense of ownership.

Porches are designed to be as spacious as bedrooms to ensure comfort and usability. This hopes to create higher chances of interaction with neighbors, creating strong relational connections with the neighborhood and to the greater community.

More to Discover, More to Enjoy, More to Love. At Amoa, we believe that everything becomes more meaningful in a home you can truly call your own. Amoa, where life means more.

ROOT HOUSE

LOCATION: TAGUIG, METRO MANILA
SIZE: 750 SQ.M.

Root House is the home of young family, sited on a limited plot of land of 300sq.m. The response is to build vertically to accommodate all the spatial requirements of the clients, and segment the massing to break down the large mass into a smaller, more human scale, resulting in a tripartite tree-like form that starts firmly on the ground and spreads out similar to a canopy of trees.

BAMBOO ORCHARD SUBDIVISION

LOCATION: CABUYAO, LAGUNA
SIZE: 4 HECTARES

Contrary to the typical “pigeon-hole” or “cookie-cutter” communities in the country, we proposed a breakthrough in social housing development, wherein homeowners have the freedom to express their persona by allowing them to specify a color for their house that they can relate with, giving them a sense of identity and ownership. Through contemporary architecture and an aspirational aesthetic, a sense of pride is instilled in the homeowners. All of these characteristics emanate from architectural frames of different colors that shift position in an alternating manner, achieving a festive character that is very Filipino in nature.

Principal Architect – Jason Buensalido; Associate Architect / Lead Project Architect – Ems Eliseo, Project Architect – Cholo Ramirez

MILADAY LIFESTYLE BUILDING

LOCATION: JUPITER ST., MAKATI CITY
SIZE: 5,500 SQUARE METERS

A pattern language was developed from typical facets that can be seen in precious stones, to reflect the jewelry company’s identity. This pattern was translated into steel lattices that can be manipulated according to how much light is desired to penetrate the building interiors, or how exposed the locators want their storefront to be. This, in combination with luxurious stone surfaces, create a façade that is classy, kinetic, and ever changing.
