Surfing

The Philippines offers surf for all levels. La Union on the northwest coast of Luzon, four hours north of Manila, is easy to get to, has good accommodation and food, and offers gentle beach breaks perfect for beginners. Baler and Infanta in Quezon, and Daet in Camarines Norte offer a more adventurous experience, with longer travel and bigger waves. For surfers seeking the extreme edge, the wild east coast is the place to be.
Siargao Island, Surigao Del Norte
Siargao Island is reputed as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines. It hosts international surfing events yearly. Its waves combine the best quality features of the top-rated waves of Hawaii's fabled "pipeline" and the top-billed waves of Indonesia. Its huge, powerful rollers have been ranked among the top five breaks in the world, including the "Cloud Nine" which is considered one of the world's top surfing waves.
La Union
The province is not wanting of natural attractions, thanks to seascapes that make it a watersports paradise. The surf fronting Monaliza in Urbiztondo, San Juan is the best site for board surfing from November to February; other good sites are in Carlatan and Wallace in San Fernando. Scuba diving is ideal in Fagg Reef, which is adorned by sharks, barracuda, sea snakes, Moray eels, and other friendly sea creatures, and Research Reef, which is endowed with several tunnels, caverns, and crevices.
Boracay
The island paradise of Boracay is a perfect place for watersports. Here, you can partake in a smorgasbord of exhilirating aqua action - from swimming and snorkeling to scuba diving, wind surfing , sailboating, kayaking, boardsailing, and boating.
Mamburao Beach Resort, Occidental Mindoro
This resort is within a completely secluded cove covering 14 hectares of developed beach resort amidst coconut trees. It has a four-kilometer long light grey sand beach. The place is ideal for swimming, boating, scuba diving, wind surfing , snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, and water skiing. Water sports facilities such as glass-bottomed boat, speedboat, hobbie cat, and outrigger boats are available for the guests.
Catanduanes
For surfers, though, Catanduanes is simply home to a break called Majestics- everything else fades into insignificance. The eastern coast of the island faces straight on to the depths of the Pacific and picks up swells that have traveled hundreds of uninterrupted kilometers to finally crash on the shores of Catanduanes. The island lies directly in the path of the Pacific typhoons, many of which make their first landfall here. It's not for nothing that Catanduanes has earned the nickname "Land of the Howling Winds."
Majestics breaks on to an offshore reef 200m from the beach on Puraran Bay. The break is known to be fickle and will not always be there, but when it's working, it kicks off one of the fastest, most hollow, right-hand barrels in the world. This is no beginner's wave, especially when it's above 6ft, and the water drains right off the sharp reefs in front of the wave. Sooner or later, you are going to end up on the reef, so protective gear is in order.
Tambobo Beach, Negros Oriental
Located along Bonbonon Bay, it is a good site for wind surfing , scuba diving, and sailing; cottages amid the white pebbled beach, with a restaurant to serve beach enthusiasts.
Red Beach, Leyte
Located in Brgys. Baras and Candahug, Palo Leyte, 10 km. from Tacloban City. Landing site of the Allied Forces headed by Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the liberation of the Philippines in 1944; panoramic view of Leyte Gulf and Samar Island; ideal place for promenading; picnicking, swimming, and wind surfing . Beach resort with restaurant, other guest services, and sports facilities, native beach, kiosks with wooden picnic tables, and benches for rent.
Casiguran Sound, Aurora
Almost like a lake, Casiguran Sound is a bay nearly enclosed by the Casiguran landmass and the peninsula of San Ildefonso. It is almost unaffected by the monsoon winds of October through February making it a perfect spot for wind surfing.
Eastern Samar
Samar has an idyllic tropical background for the surf adventurer. There are no real details in surf magazines as to where the surf areas are, and this is a place for the true surfer to explore. Many of the breaks on Eastern Samar have been surfed by but a few, real enthusiasts. Some have most likely never been surfed before.
However, with time and effort you could be well rewarded with one of many locations in this area of secret surfing paradise. You would be best advised to start your quest around Borongan and linger there, and then head off north, or south.
The season for the best waves is generally September through to March, with the bigger swells arriving later in that period.
The people of Samar are extremely friendly. The scenery is a tropical delight, which when combined with some classic un-crowded surf makes this an ideal place to visit and explore.
Pagudpud Beach, Ilocos Norte
In the Northern part of the Philippines is a beach reputed to have the longest contiguous white sand with mighty waves and strong winds that can compare to Hawaii. Wind and wave surfing are the outstanding activities that Pagudpud beach offers its very discriminating clientele. Not to mention the inviting views, clear blue waters, and white sand. Pagudpud promises its visitors a magnificent experience in a secluded paradise.
