Spelunking

Some of the most spectacular sceneries in the Philippines lie deep underground. Almost every island has cave sytems, some accessible to the casual tourist, others challenging the skilled spelunker. Beneath the earth lie rivers and waterfalls, narrow passages, and vaulted chambers filled with a surreal array of limestone and crystal formations. Many caves are totally unexplored, presenting the ultimate thrill in adventure travel: the chance to walk where no human has ever been.
Nueva Vizcaya
The adventure alternative destination of the Philippines is offering a 2day/2 night weekend adventure. This tour highlights the Capisaan Cave System, the fifth longest cave system in the country. Measuring 4.2 kms., the Lion and Alayan Caves in Malabing Valley, Kasibu are relatively new spots frequented by an increasing number of cavers and mountaineers. Located in Brgy. Capisaan, the two caves which are only a part of a cave network has layers of chambers with unique formations of stalagmites and stalactites. Geologists and speleologists have called it a Geologist's paradise because of the varying rare formations inside these caves (Helectites, speleothems, straws, capers, columns, flowstones, etc.).
Cagayan
Caves of different classifications abound in the province, which makes it a spelunker's paradise. The Peñablanca Protected Landscape, the northern corridor to the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, is home to some 300 cave s, 75 of which have been documented by the National Museum and 30 have been mapped by the British Exploration Club and its local counterpart, the Sierra Madre Outdoor Club. On April 7-13, 2003, SMOC hosted the 24th Mountaineering Federation Philippines, Inc., Congress and Climb which was attended by some 200 outdoor enthusiasts.
Callao Cave, just outside Penablanca, is ideal for the traveler who wants a brief taste of the underground. But the region is packed with dozens of other cave s, some partially explored, others still virgin. Sierra, only a 15-minute walk from Callao, has huge chambers filled with white, crystal-studded columns. At Odessa, a cave system with over 8km of known passages and others yet to be explored, spelunkers pass through elephant-sized walkways and narrow, tortuous squeezes. Formations include calcite grottoes and crystalline flowstones. Another cave , Heaven, has a fantastic chamber, which is a highlight of the underground experience. Heaven can be hellish to get to, but those who have been there agree that it's worth the effort.
Mountain Province
If you want to go underground without special training and equipment, Sagada is your best bet. The town sits in a limestone valley riddled with over 60 known cave s. The Sagada cave s feature shimmering underground streams with golden or silvery stalactite and stalagmite formations and cool natural pools inside. Sumaging, the largest, can be explored by anyone with a local guide; the basic tour lasts around three hours but it is possible to spend an entire day inside. There are also many opportunities here for serious spelunkers.
Bukidnon
This upland province in Northern Mindanao has 80 to 90 known cave s, many of them still unexplored. Most of the known cave s are easily reached. Speleo Mindanao, a local group of spelunkers, can provide guides and equipment. Most cave explorers begin with the 2.5km Sumalsag Cave , a trip that requires extensive immersion, with a short underwater swim at the exit. The relatively easy Basag Cave has three waterfalls averaging 5 meters in height, and a beautiful display of formations.
